Rent an Operator Along With That Crane

Posted on: 12 February 2021

Crane rental is convenient, and companies that need to rent a crane for the first time are in for a pleasant surprise: They can often rent an operator along with the crane. In other words, when they rent the equipment, a trained crane operator arrives with it and controls the crane according to the site supervisor's instructions. Your company doesn't have to arrange for an operator to arrive with the crane, but it does help a lot, in many ways.

They Know How That Exact Model Works

This operator will already be familiar with the crane; if not the exact piece of equipment you're renting, then at least the model of the crane. This will not be an unfamiliar piece of machinery to the operator like it would be to whoever in your company would operate the crane instead. There's less adjustment time, meaning you can get more work done without having to wait for the crane operator to get used to the controls.

Their Company Insurance Coverage Is Usually Better

Arranging for a crane operator to arrive with the crane instead of letting one of your own workers operate the machine is akin to having a plumber fix a plumbing problem in your home instead of you going the DIY route. That plumber's work will come with guarantees and warranties that cover future repairs if the current repairs fail. The plumber will also have insurance that covers their medical bills and any damage the plumber does to your home.

It's the same with the crane operator. An operator from the crane rental company will have coverage from their own company in case they are injured, and if the operator causes damage at your site, the crane rental company's coverage will cover repairs. If your crew tries to operate the crane, any damage or injury claims go through your own insurance coverage, which can raise the company's premiums down the road.

They Know What the Warning Signs From That Model Are

An operator from the crane rental company will also be more aware of warning signs that the crane might be having difficulty. They'll be more likely to understand all the creaks and odd sounds that the crane can make and understand which ones are cause for alarm. If your crew tries to operate an unfamiliar crane and hears odd sounds, for example, it will be harder to distinguish between those that indicate mild issues and those that indicate severe problems.
