A Few Things to Know Before Attempting to Get a Crane Rental

Posted on: 29 December 2021

While many construction projects may not require heavy construction equipment, there are instances where a crane may make a particular project much easier to complete. Whether you are a homeowner doing a home renovation or a builder that's run into a complication on the building site, it's good to know you can rent a crane if it's needed to simplify the building process. There are a few important things to know before getting a crane rental.

A License May Be Required

Not every situation will require someone to have an operating license to rent a crane. It's important to note that different states have different requirements as to when a license is necessary. Most states, however, do require a license for large cranes that reach a certain weight. If you need a large crane, you will likely need to hire a crane operator who is licensed to obtain a rental for your project. Any experienced crane operator will help you maintain a safe working environment, and he or she will be able to help you safely maneuver heavy materials about the site with the crane.

Cost of Rental Varies Based on Use

Depending on the kind of construction project, you may be required to pay for insurance to protect the crane you are renting. If you may need the crane for multiple days, you can sometimes obtain a discounted cost. Most crane rentals would be for the day, and you wouldn't be able to rent by the hour as you would with other equipment. This is mostly because of the time and cost to transport most cranes. One of the best ways to save on crane rentals is to rent for consecutive days, so you'll want to try and coordinate any projects where a crane will be used for the same time period.

Plan for Permits

Another part of crane use is making sure that you have the proper permissions to use a crane within the city limits. This is specifically true of any demolition projects that involve large canes, and it is also true of any projects where large materials may be moved around that could potentially get close to neighboring properties. It may be required of you to provide the proper permits for use of a crane in some areas before you'll be able to obtain a rental. It's important to understand what the rules are in your particular city.

One of the ways you can save time is to hire a licensed crane operator first before attempting to rent your crane. He or she will likely know what permits are needed for a particular project, and be able to help you rent the right crane for your specific project.
